What kind of survey would you like?

Six quick taps, then where to reach you.

The short answer: when we checked on 3 November 2026, no grant for business solar was open in Northern Ireland. Power NI's NISEP grant of up to 20% has closed for 2026/27, with the next scheme expected in April 2027, and Invest NI's Energy Efficiency Capital Grant is paused for review. Northern Ireland also has no Smart Export Guarantee, so a system sized to your own daytime use matters even more here. Capital allowances still apply.

Free site survey: we match you with one MCS certified installer who covers your area and the size of the job. Your details go to that installer only, so you're not passed around or ring-rounded.

The NISEP solar grant through Power NI

The Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP) has funded a grant through Power NI towards business solar (Power NI):

  • How much. A grant of up to 20% towards the cost of installing solar PV or solar thermal.
  • Status. "The grant scheme for 26/27 has now closed for applications." Subject to funding approval, Power NI expects the next scheme to open in April 2027.
  • Conditions. Only available in Northern Ireland, not suitable for new builds, subject to de minimis aid, and no orders or work before a grant offer.

If you would rather wait for the next round, a survey now tells you what your site can take and what it would cost, so you are ready to apply when it opens.

Invest NI: the paused grant and the advice

Invest NI launched its Energy Efficiency Capital Grant in April 2024. Its examples of projects included heating and cooling, motors and drives, compressed air, lighting and onsite renewable generation, and it was part funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. After one year of operation, Invest NI paused the scheme to review its performance against the Department for the Economy's objectives (Invest NI). It had not reopened when we checked.

Invest NI still provides expert advice to Northern Ireland businesses on saving energy and reducing waste (Invest NI). Its helpline is 0800 181 4422 (nibusinessinfo.co.uk).

Getting paid for exports without the SEG

The Smart Export Guarantee, which requires some electricity suppliers to pay for exported power, covers Great Britain (Ofgem). In Northern Ireland:

  • Export payments. Power NI buys exported electricity from small-scale generators. Payments are based on your meter readings, and its fixed rates are published each October (Power NI).
  • No new ROCs. The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation closed to new generation in March 2017. Only systems accredited before then receive ROCs, for 20 years (nibusinessinfo.co.uk).
  • What this means. The money is in the electricity you use yourself, which replaces power you would otherwise buy. Size the system to your daytime use and treat export as a bonus.

NIE Networks: connecting to the grid

Northern Ireland has one network operator, NIE Networks. Its routes for solar (NIE Networks):

NIE Networks generation connection routes, checked 3 November 2026
RouteCovers
G98/NIUp to 16 A per phase: 3.68 kVA on a single-phase supply, 11.04 kW on three-phase. Most common for homes and small commercial properties.
G99/NI Fast TrackUp to 60 A per phase, with each inverter limited to 32 A per phase and export limited to 16 A per phase. NIE Networks changed the Fast Track parameters in May 2026.
G99/NIAnything above the Fast Track limits: most commercial systems.

NIE Networks publishes a capacity map of available network capacity for generation and demand, highlighting areas where reinforcement may be needed (NIE Networks). Your installer makes the application. More: grid connection for business solar.

Northern Ireland's permitted development rules for non-domestic buildings (Part 37):

  • On the building (Class A). No more than 20 cm proud of a roof slope that faces and is visible from a road; on a flat roof, no more than 2 metres above it and not within 2 metres of its edge; not above the ridge. In a conservation area or World Heritage Site, not on a wall or slope facing and visible from a road. Listed buildings need listed building consent.
  • Stand-alone (Class B). No higher than 2 metres, at least 5 metres from the boundary, up to 30 square metres.
  • Rates. Generating plant of 50 kW or less is not rateable. Above 50 kW it is rateable, and self-consumption plant is valued with the property (Department of Finance).
  • Tax. Capital allowances apply: the Annual Investment Allowance covers up to £1 million of qualifying spending a year.

What we check before we match you

  • MCS certification: current, and on the MCS installer register.
  • Other accreditations they hold, for example NICEIC or NAPIT, RECC and TrustMark. We favour installers with more relevant accreditations.
  • Their customer reviews on public review sites.
  • How long they have been trading, and that the company is active at Companies House with its accounts filed.
  • Stability: no frequent changes of directors in recent years.
  • That they cover your area and do jobs of your size.

If an installer doesn't meet these, we don't match them.

Questions

Solar grants for businesses in Northern Ireland: FAQs

Are there grants for solar panels for businesses in Northern Ireland?

Not open ones when we checked on 3 November 2026. Power NI's grant of up to 20% towards business solar PV, funded by the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP), has closed for 2026/27; Power NI says the next scheme is expected to open in April 2027, subject to funding approval. Invest NI's Energy Efficiency Capital Grant, which supported onsite renewable generation, is paused for review.

Is the Invest NI Energy Efficiency Capital Grant open?

No. Invest NI launched it in April 2024 and, after one year of operation, paused it to review its performance against the Department for the Economy's objectives. Invest NI still gives businesses expert advice on saving energy; its helpline is 0800 181 4422.

Does the Smart Export Guarantee apply in Northern Ireland?

No. Ofgem's Smart Export Guarantee covers Great Britain. In Northern Ireland, Power NI buys exported electricity from small-scale generators, paying on meter readings at fixed rates it publishes each October. The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation closed to new generation in March 2017, so new systems don't earn ROCs.

Who connects solar to the grid in Northern Ireland?

NIE Networks, the single network operator for Northern Ireland. Systems up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kVA single-phase, 11.04 kW three-phase) connect under G98/NI. G99/NI Fast Track covers up to 60 A per phase with export limited to 16 A per phase; anything larger needs a G99/NI application. NIE Networks publishes a capacity map showing where the network has room.

Do solar panels on a business in Northern Ireland pay rates?

The Department of Finance says generating plant of 50 kW or less is not rateable, under the Rates (Microgeneration) Order (NI) 2012. Above 50 kW it is rateable; where the power is mainly used on site, such as rooftop panels on a factory, the plant is valued with the property.

Can a business in Northern Ireland claim capital allowances on solar?

Yes. Capital allowances are UK tax rules, so they apply in Northern Ireland as in Great Britain. The Annual Investment Allowance covers up to £1 million of qualifying spending a year, and solar panels are special rate plant.
